Pond pumps are crucial to the survival of your koi pond. It provides aeration which prevents stagnant water. Whether you have a liner pond or concrete pond, stagnant water will create all sorts of problems for you fish pond. A good example would be mosquito infestation. An important note to remember is that you must have the pond pump running 24 hours a day.
This means that it is a good idea to have a back-up pump. Therefore, if you ever have a problem with the first pump or if you need to clean it, you can have the back-up pump take over. Yes, your fish would likely be fine if the pump was not running for just an hour, but why take the chance? Why cause stress on your fish?
Some pond owners have 2 pond pumps running at all times. Whether you use just one or two pumps at a time, it is important that it circulates the entire volume of your pond about once an hour. So, if you have a 1000 gallon pond, then you will need at least a 1000 gallons per hour (gph) pump.
There are very many kinds of pumps, and they are not just for fish. Some are used to provide the power to circulate water through waterfalls, fountains, ornaments, filter systems and sterilizer units. When you have a pond you to have a pond pump, otherwise you may end up with a swamp!
